Simple celtic cable

-->

A relatively simple cable featuring closed loops. Foundation row requires 15 stitches (pattern increases to 23); 24 or 26-row repeat.

This is a simple Celtic-style cable. With the exception of rows 2 and 24, all wrong-side stitches are worked “as they lie”; the silhouette of this cable is also symmetric with a moderately-sized short row repeat, making it easy to incorporate into clothing designs.

The method of beginning and ending the closed loops is the method taught by Alice Starmore in her books The Celtic Collection and Aran Knitting, which itself is a variant (although not necessarily derived from) the method published earlier by Barbara Walker in Charted Knitting Designs (also known as A Third Treasury of Knitting Patterns).

The chart below represents a single repeat, as photographed. The effect of following rows 1-24 only is to position an open-loop formation directly above a close-loop formation, separated by only one WS row wedged in between (row 24). I’ve noticed that spacing the open- and close-loop forms so close together results in pulling between those rows, which leaves gaping stitches. This might be remedied by tighter knitting at these points, but it would probably be easier and more effective to insert another two rows of knitting between the repeats (rows 25 and 26, which continue the pattern set by row 24). This sample was knitted in Dunnose Head Farm’s Falkland Pioneer Aran Wool on 5 mm (US 8) needles.

Text instructions for this cable are now available! Thank you Theresa Innis for writing this up.
