Rogue Hooded Pullover
A hooded pullover shaped by Celtic-style cables to be knit in aran-weight yarn.
Cables flow along either side of the split neck to create a cabled border around the hood. The triangular cable motifs accenting the wrists are echoed in slim side panels providing subtle waist shaping for the body.
The pullover body is knit in the round to the armholes, then divided and knit flat to the shoulders. The hood and cabled border are knit in one piece to the top shaping, where the borders are grafted (or bound off) together, then sewn to the top of the hood. The sleeves are knit flat, then seamed and sewn to the body. The hem and cuffs are finished with a self-facing. The optional kangaroo pocket is edged with a simple stockinette border.

Sizes: women's 35.5", 39", 43.5", and 48" (finished bust measurement)
Fitting notes: The design is intended to have about 2 to 4" (5 to 10 cm) of ease, although you may prefer a tighter or looser fit. In these pictures, the green model is knit in the 39" size and is displayed over a thin turtleneck on a mannequin with a 36" bust size. The ivory model (top photo at the right) is in the 35.5" size, again displayed over a thin turtleneck, but on a mannequin with a 35" bust size. There is no provision for short-row bust shaping, but you may alter the body length by changing the number of pattern repeats in the side panels.
Skill set: experienced with advanced cables. For those obsessed with perfection, the split neck is worked in a manner to assure perfectly symmetric shaping. This means that you will have to work three cables on the wrong side. The chart key provides instructions on how to work these wrong-side cables.
Gauge: 4.5 sts and 6 rows to 1" (2.5 cm) in stockinette stitch, both in the round and knit flat. Use different-sized needles for knitting in the round and knitting back-and-forth if necessary.
Yarn: Choose a yarn that has some inherent resilience (elasticity) to make working the cables and decreases easier. The cables will appear to best advantage in a wool yarn, especially if the yarn blooms a little on washing, as in the light green model (a woolen-spun pure wool yarn that, to my knowledge, was never distributed). If you choose a yarn that doesn't have much of wool's natural stretch, such as the twisted one-ply 70% wool/30% silk blend used in the ivory model, the fabric will have more drape; while the pullover is just as lovely, the cables do not stand out as much as they do in pure wool.
Yardage: For 35.5" (39", 43.5", 48") size: 1100 (1200, 1350, 1500) metres or 1200 (1300, 1485, 1650) yards.
