3c, LB doesn't necessarily have a large market share because they are good or deserving of it. They have it because they're cheap and easy to find. (And they must have a killer profit margin.) Until I moved to NYC, I did not know yarn stores existed that sold other brands. I just thought they had some weird choke hold on the market.

[responding to the comments to-date more than to the blog entry]

Er, when y'all get uppity and talk about 'bad' yarns and 'bad' patterns -- um, Lion is in business, so aren't you really talking about the 'bad' taste in patterns and yarns that seems to sell to a big segment of the market with similar 'bad' taste in patterns and yarns? If it was a product that had no appeal in the marketplace, it wouldn't sell.

Not quite my taste in yarns or patterns either, but business is business -- and demand is demand. But I'm not sure the seller is at fault (yeah yeah, we could discuss 'push' vs. 'pull' marketing if you want -- but why bother...).

Yeah, we all have 'better' taste than Lion anything or Red Heart sells. Then again, I think some of those 'crap' yarns are great values for what you pay for them, compared to boutique novelty crap or inflated prices for basics that a lot of companies are charging.

What does the poncho thing tell you? What do their best-seller yarns tell you? That there's a really big market out there you're not in synch with :)

I'm with Erika. A high ranking of 'poncho' for a search term speaks volumes about the brand and the website.
