I just discovered this site while trying to find out the yardage for Starmore’s Scottish Heather yarn. I plan on substituting a worsted weight and I have a color chosen, but do not know how many skeins to buy. Any suggestions as to a) the yardage or b) where to find the information.

Intriguing! Now I know why my attempts the reach The Broad Bay Company for a Scottish Heather replacement (flaw in a skein of yarn) were in vain!

Note that if you bought the yarn from Jamieson’s that was on sale in late 2005, it wasn’t the same guage as Scottish Heather.

Some of the colours in the VY range have close cousins in Rowan’s Scottish Tweed. However, they’re made by different mills. Rowan’s Scottish Tweed is made in Scotland, and I’ve been told that the VY yarn is now made somewhere in GB outside Scotland.

Recently I purchased Jamieson’s scotttish heather to sub. for the yarn called for St. Brigid, in Aran Knitting. You would think that it would work, because the yardage was practically the same as the yarn called for , but I could not achieve gauge. I went to Virtual Yarns, actually ordered the yarn called for and it is amazingly lovely. The softness is beyond Jamieson’s and it is a 3 ply yarn, and gives me the right gauge. You need to fish around the site to find all of the amazing colors, but they are there. I feel incredibly inspired by the Starmore’s and their artistry.

Wow! I thought I was the only one going nuts trying to figure out how to substitute Starmore’s yarn. Even if you go to her website the information there is very vage and it is so hard to figure out what yarns and colors are available… I didn’t have an idea why. Any chance you or someone reading in this blog can post a decent table for substituting this yarn? I hope someone post it somewhere on the internet. I bought some Rowanspun to substitute the Scottish Fleet in the Dollar Sand Sweater but it hasn’t arrived yet. It should work since the gauge is the same, but I am going nuts trying to substitute other designs.I don’t want to buy kits from virtual yarns with different gauges than the original patterns…plus the high prices… What a mess!

Answer:

For Alice Starmore brand Campion, Scottish Heather, Fleet, or Bainin, go snoop around eBay.

For jumper-weight (Fair Isle) or worsted weight yarn in those mostly heathery colours and durable aran-weight yarn in those solid colours, Jamieson was the mill that was making that yarn for AS at the time the yarn was discontinued. Jamieson still makes the same yarn in many of the same colours, just branded as Jamieson.

If your definition of “authentic” involves Starmore’s own yarn, but not the same colours as the original, go to Starmore’s new(er) business and buy her yarn packs for the designs that originally appeared in the books. The finished result will look different from the books.

I am just finishing a starmore pattern (a child’s coat from the Secret Garden) but wondering where I can get the yarn to make another, more “authentic” one.
