I don’t know whether Virginia Bellamy is still alive, but her patent isn’t. It would have expired in 1965.

I love doing this knitting. It is so easy to do, and I do have a copy of her original book. Does anyone know if the patent has expired, or if Ms. Bellamy is still alive?

saw Vivian Hoxbro speak recently. She’s done a lot with “modular” knitting or “domino knitting” as she calls it. She mentioned Bellamy and said she became aware of her after her book was published.

I had to run to my bookshelf and pull down Anne L. Macdonald’s “Feminine Ingenuity” (the other book by the No Idle Hands author). Sad to say, Macdonald appears to have missed Bellamy’s patent in her catalog of women inventors. Too bad, as Macdonald herself owned a knitting-related patent, and the challenges of obtaining it are what started her off on her second book. I’ll be hunting around for Bellamy’s original work now.
