This just in: Lion Brand taps into knitting zeitgeist
Did you ever want to publish a meme, but… louder?
Simple. Instead of blogging the most popular hits and search terms used to reach your website, issue a press release.

Umm. Okayyyy . . . I’m sure they have a few PR interns who are capable of putting together something like this.

They really do want some market share eh? It would help if they made some decent yarns of course.

The fact that Martha’s poncho is still #3 tells you all you need to know, really.

I’m with Erika. A high ranking of ‘poncho’ for a search term speaks volumes about the brand and the website.

Er, when y’all get uppity and talk about ‘bad’ yarns and ‘bad’ patterns — um, Lion is in business, so aren’t you really talking about the ‘bad’ taste in patterns and yarns that seems to sell to a big segment of the market with similar ‘bad’ taste in patterns and yarns? If it was a product that had no appeal in the marketplace, it wouldn’t sell.
Not quite my taste in yarns or patterns either, but business is business — and demand is demand. But I’m not sure the seller is at fault (yeah yeah, we could discuss ‘push’ vs. ‘pull’ marketing if you want — but why bother…).
Yeah, we all have ‘better’ taste than Lion anything or Red Heart sells. Then again, I think some of those ‘crap’ yarns are great values for what you pay for them, compared to boutique novelty crap or inflated prices for basics that a lot of companies are charging.
What does the poncho thing tell you? What do their best-seller yarns tell you? That there’s a really big market out there you’re not in synch with :)

McDonald’s is hugely popular; does that make it good? :)

I don’t know why, but I’m laughing at this scenario.

3c, LB doesn’t necessarily have a large market share because they are good or deserving of it. They have it because they’re cheap and easy to find. (And they must have a killer profit margin.) Until I moved to NYC, I did not know yarn stores existed that sold other brands. I just thought they had some weird choke hold on the market.
